The Conscious and Unconscious Analysis on the Life of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde Essay Example
The Conscious and Unconscious: Analysis on the Life of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde Essay The Conscious and Unconscious: Analysis on the Life of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde By Bernadine SyTiong March 16 2010 ââ¬Å"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeâ⬠by Robert Louis Stevenson originated from a dream that the author once had and he described it as ââ¬Å"a fine bogy taleâ⬠when he awoke from it. Stevenson was first inspired from the cityââ¬â¢s low life and the bizarre characters that he came across with and that his Calvinistic upbringing and his constant fight against ill-health led him to be engrossed with death and the darker side of human nature serving as his inspiration in many of his works making him as a novelist often noted by his powers of invention and depth of psychological insight found in his work. This novel which focuses on the split personality and the belief that evil is potentially more powerful than good has been a popular topic even up until now. Humans may often be ignorant about the fact that at times they do hear a voice inside that tells them the desires of a personality exactly the opposite of the current one. The ââ¬Å"Theory of Psychoanalysisâ⬠according to Sigmund Freud is that the whole psychoanalytic theory is in fact built up on the perception of the resistance exerted by the patient when we try to make him conscious of his unconscious. A successful doctor born to a large fortune and well respected by his fellow men, a life seems like to be perfect yet still yearning for something. This is exactly how Dr. Henry Jekyll feels after years of failure in inventing a sort of potion. His years of wanting to complete it only made him more anxious of desiring to have its final result and maybe finally ease his longing of something he has yet to discover. Dr. Jekyll is the best example of man in its most secret manner for man hides his true feelings which he knows can affect peopleââ¬â¢s view of him. Here we can see Freudââ¬â¢s theory of psychoanalysis. The unconscious is manifested to us as something that holds itself in suspense in the area of the unborn. When Dr. Jekyll had finally completed the potion and tested it on himself, an alter ego of himself came out yet this alter ego looked nothing like him for if Jekyll was a little man with a big handsome face, Edward Hyde, Jekyllââ¬â¢s alter ego was described as: ââ¬Å"Pale and dwarfish; he gave an impression of deformity without any namable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky whispering and somewhat broken voiceâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Everyone that met him had an impression of unknown disgust, loathing and fear towards him, very unlikely when compared to Dr. Jekyll. In this case we see that there is a split of personality and by their appearances we can already see who the bad is and the good. Though this seems surreal and impossible, it implements a personââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"splitting of the mindâ⬠and ââ¬Å"splitting of the consciousnessâ⬠which belongs to Freudâ⠬â¢s ââ¬Å"Several prominent 19th century about unconscious processâ⬠. Whenever Edward Hyde is in control of the body, he has a hunger for evil like he breathes it, on the other hand when Henry Jekyll gets back to his body he seems to not remember what Hyde has done like he was asleep all the time that Hyde was in control. The first of Freudââ¬â¢s ideas is that, ââ¬Å"mental activity separates into parallel streams, only one of which can be conscious at any moment. â⬠In other words, he described this as the splitting of the mind. Here he described that a man as such performs activities mechanically and with only half their mind on them. There really are times that people do things unconsciously even just for a second because there are times that we are somewhat under hypnosis from ourselves like times when we unconsciously stare at nothing while our hands are doing something that we do not already know. In the like, Dr. Jekyll is the person and Mr. Hyde is the hands. In this light, we can also relate the splitting of personality which Freud describes as the parallel mental activity. He observed that when we speak, we are at the conscious state but when the unconscious one interferes, the conscious is attached to one of the two states meaning that he can be on his side or the side of his unconscious. The last chapter of the novel is entitled ââ¬Å"Henry Jekyllââ¬â¢s Full Statement of the Caseâ⬠where in Jekyll finally admits all the bizarre things that are happening with him and the mysterious Edward Hyde. Jekyll admits that as time passes with drinking the potion, there were cases that he turns into Hyde without even drinking the potion. He was afraid to go to sleep because every time he woke up, Hyde would possess the body although this time the mind was split into two: Jekyllââ¬â¢s and Hydeââ¬â¢s. In these characters which possess only one body, we can see the struggle for freedom. Jekyll was an old and weak man, life seemed to have gone out from him as age overpowered him and maybe that is why he wanted to find an alternative for his misery. Freedom is what each person desires, to be able to do anything you want without abiding to any rules is somehow manââ¬â¢s longing for each day. Most people may be content of their life but they cannot hide the fact that at times things unusual to them would come in mind and that they start to wonder what it would feel like if they had done them. Freedom is the ââ¬Å"absolutization of the absolute itselfâ⬠. Wherefore to be absolute is to be detached from everything: relations and every presence, including itself. Aristotle may refer happiness as ââ¬Å"The Chiefâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Ultimate Goodâ⬠wherein it is the desire that is above all else, but what is the cause of happiness is it not ultimate freedom? Yet freedom is not always in terms of good because if people desire it, then they will do anything to have it. In Jean-Luc Nancyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Experience of Freedomâ⬠, he states that: ââ¬Å"Freedom spontaneously admits, of itself, a maxim of wickedness. Evil is the extreme freedom against the Absolute within the whole of beings, for freedom is the capacity for good and evil. The good ââ¬Å"isâ⬠the evil and the evil ââ¬Å"isâ⬠the good. â⬠The desire of freedom makes people do things that are not of the ordinary but evil does not fully reveal without really having the consent of the good, meaning that the good wants to let evil out also because it knows that freedom will always require a bit of evil. Henry Jekyll admitted that he had committed to a profound duplicity of life. Henry Jekyll was in a state of emotional distress and he needed to find a resolution to it, thus he found Edward Hyde which did make him feel better at first but otherwise later. He knew that there was the evil side of him the unconscious that lets him does anything freely. Henry Jekyll wants to become Edward Hyde, not just because Edward Hyde is the dominant one. Jekyll knew, even before his scientific discovery there was another part of him that desired for another only he experienced them in daydreams and as time passed, he had a longing to bring this feeling to life. Freud declares that desire is indestructible for it merely conveys what it maintains of an image of the past towards an ever short and limited future. But what Jekyll is yet to realize are the consequences of his decisions for once evil is let loose it will savor the freedom it has attained and when it is yet again chained, it will roar for its freedom. Freud, according to his ideas about unconscious processes coined this as the ââ¬Å"splitting of consciousnessâ⬠, which is the second idea wherein he states that a sudden switching can occur from one parallel stream to another. Evil forms a sort of shadow kingdom in oneââ¬â¢s mind until they become like bad spirits that take control of the body. Jekyll knew that all human beings are commingled out of good and evil, but one has a choice to resist by he chose to live in two identities until he could not control the evil side of him. One can only liberate himself from good or evil through the freedom in action by the limit of thought. Human beings are born with a will and it has the power to resist anything it wants. No one can say that he is being controlled; he does something because he wants to. Jekyll welcomed Hyde when he first appeared because it was in Hyde that he saw a livelier image of the spirit in him and because of the new profound power that he possessed, Jekyll became a slave to Hyde. In a sense that when we let temptations get to us it will always come back for more. We give into temptations and it will always come back because it knows our weakness and it attacks it so that we can fall into its pit, this is what we call evil. Henry Jekyll had gone for quite some time without letting Hyde appear, he mingled with friends and everyone saw how much livelier he had become but this was not to last because Hyde would not allow it that he be chained forever. Jekyll stated: ââ¬Å"I was still cursed with my duality of purpose; and as the first edge of my penitence wore off, the lower side of me, so long indulged, so recently chained down, began to growl for license. â⬠Jekyll had fun being Hyde but it was when Hyde commanded for full charge that his problems arose. Edward Hyde was the pure evil of Henry Jekyll and he was wanted because of murder. Jekyll never predicted that it would come to this point that he would have a hard time becoming himself because Hyde was beginning to appear even when Jekyll did not drink the potion. Jekyll always took comfort that if anything was to go wrong in the form of Edward Hyde, he would always get away with it since he could just drink the potion and transform back into himself yet he did not know that this was not to last. Edward Hyde had have liberty too long enough that he was growing stronger in his form while Henry Jekyll grew weaker. There was no more balance between them and Jekyll feared that Hyde would not stop until he had full control and finally put Jekyll to sleep. Jekyll was suffering from all of Hydeââ¬â¢s action because he has everything to lose while Hyde would not even be affected. Freud stated in his fourth idea that conscious activity is influenced by the unconscious. Jekyll was starting to share the pleasures of Hyde, heââ¬â¢s becoming greedy and this was He was not scared of being condemned by people but rather he was scared of being Edward Hyde. He referred Hyde as a child of hell that had nothing human; nothing lived in him but fear and hatred. But Jekyll saw something that he had never seen in his own perspective, Hyde loved life wonderfully and had it not been for his fear of death, he would have long ago ruined himself taking Jekyll with him. Jekyll saw how Hyde was so passionate at life that at times when he was decided to end his life, his pity for Hyde would always be his weakness. Hyde embraced life in a way that Jekyll never did and that is why maybe he would have thought that maybe being Hyde would finally set him free because after all, what he had long been searching is meaning to life and freedom. Though Edward Hydeââ¬â¢s meaning in life may be wholly cruel, Jekyll always wondered why had he never embraced life like his alter ego? What was in Hyde that made him act do freely in his nature and ignores the people and the judgment around him? Jekyll longed to find that passion in his own identity but it was too late because Hyde was beginning to take over and trapping him inside. For if the existent can decide on ruin and on its own ruin, and if this possibility is inscribed in the very being of existence, such a decision is no less what also ruins the decision in its existential essence. ââ¬Å"There is an authentic freedom, which decides freedom for existence and for the singular relation that is, and which decides it from the heart of an infinite non-innocence where the in-finity of being, which does not have its own essence, can always unleash itself, and in a sense has always ready been unleashed, as fury. â⬠Henry Jekyll decided to end his life. Though he felt pity for Edward Hyde, he himself could not endure the pain any longer and if Hyde was too fully take over, he would have also been thrown to the gallows for his crime. Jekyll could not find any more the salt that completed his potion, making it impure meaning that any mixture he made could not anymore bring back Henry Jekyll completely. It was not only physical pain that he felt but his soul was also tearing apart. He, at first, liked being Edward Hyde but then realized that he loved being Henry Jekyll yet all was too late. He confessed everything in writing before he had finally ended a life that had two identities and he knew that ending his life will be more painful to Hyde than him because life was his passion but he had no choice, his only view of salvation for him and Hyde was death. Stevensonââ¬â¢s novel may seem like a scientific fantasy that can never happen in real life but what he is trying to portray is that in human beings, there is always the conscious and the unconscious, the good and evil side of man. Because of frailties, disabilities and failures we tend to sink into an emotional distress that lets a foreign part of our mind be revealed. No matter how good a person may be, only one knows in himself the secret desires to be truly free, to act without abiding to anything or anyone. Stevenson dreamt about this novel and put it to writing in the sense that Freud has a theory of the relationship between conscious and unconscious activity in dreams which he saw as ââ¬Å"the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mindâ⬠. We can see here that the life of Henry Jekyll can be a portrayal of the authorââ¬â¢s life in a minor sense. Stevenson was ill-health and had a weak disposition and because of this he could not really achieve what his father wanted him to be which drives him to think to the darker side of life. Freud claimed that memories of distressing events are too painful to be admitted to consciousness and are subjected to a process of censorship and disguise by the mechanisms of ââ¬Å"dream workâ⬠, which included the representation of familiar things or people in symbolic form. Henry Jekyll was right when he said that all human beings, as we meet them, are commingled with good and evil. Every person has their good and bad side in them which the latter he hides in fear that people will judge him. Society dictates peopleââ¬â¢s lives, even if we do not admit it. People always care for what the public thinks of them for no one wants to be ruined in the sight of everyone because sometimes one wrong can forever be marked in oneââ¬â¢s life. But at some point, through desire and curiosity, humans do show a side of them which is very unlikely for they want to know the taste of freedom. For freedom spontaneously admits, of itself, a maxim of wickedness and evil is as freedom, the most extreme freedom against the Absolute within the whole of beings. Who would not want a life that is free with no one to dictate what is right and wrong? Yet when it gets too far, it no longer is freedom but is transformed to chains for being too absorbed into it brings its consequences. In the sense of Edward Hyde taking over Henry Jekyllââ¬â¢s body, human beings somewhat go crazy in the thought that there is no more answer than death. One can say that the master is no more spared by death than is his slave, that he will always die in the end, and that this is the limit of his freedom. The revelation of the essence of the master is manifested at the moment of terror, when it is to him that one says freedom or death, and the he has obviously only death to choose in order to have freedom. Henry Jekyll ended his life in order for him to have freedom, not Edward Hyde. He did pity Hyde for he was such a passionate person about life but Jekyll wanted to be free also but with Hyde forever attached to him, his life was no different that being in hell. We want a happy life, one that shouts freedom but it does not mean that to be evil is the only way to be free. Humans have a choice and sometimes we take the wrong path but this serves as a lesson and we should learn to decide the better of ourselves before everything is too late. Evil can never result to ultimate happiness, it may bring contentment to our desires for a while but when it seeks payment, we suffer the consequences taking the happy and free life we thought to be real and lasting. There is always a warning whenever we are to be swallowed by evil and temptations will always arise in its most powerful sense but all this will serve as a trial to see if we can resist the evil and take over with the goodness in us, but some are tricked into believing that giving in will fulfill all their desires but is destroyed at the end. There is a free decision that frees freedom for itself, for its finitude, for its haring, for equality, for community, for fraternity, and for their justice- singularly, singularly shared/divided, singularly withdrawn from the hatred of existence. God never made man so that He can force him to do things, but He made man with a free will having the ability to freely choose his own decisions and ways. Evil may always be tempting but we can fight it, we just have to be believe and stand strong on our faith that we can overcome it. The evil and good of man are relative to each other itââ¬â¢s always in our choice to choose what side. The unconscious is a part of life in which the conscious can never take away but what it can do is not only balance it but decide on what can be the betterment in life. What Is ACT Score Choice
What Is ACT Score Choice SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you just got your ACT scores back, youââ¬â¢re probably wondering about the process of score reporting for college. "Score Choice" is technically more associated with the SAT Score Choiceprogram, but the ACT has a similar policy for its own test score reporting. It will allow you to feel much less stressed about results from individual test dates and instead focus on how to improve in the future. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll go over what Score Choice is and what it means for your ACT testing strategy. ACT Score Choice: The Basics Score Choice for the ACT is relatively simple. It means you have the option to only send scores from certain test dates to colleges rather than sending all of your scores. On the score report request form, you will be asked to list your college of choice and the test date you want to send on each line. For the ACT, you are charged a $12 fee for each test date you send (even if youââ¬â¢re sending them to the same college), so making smart choices about which ones you want to send is also financially responsible. For example, if you want to send two test dates to 10 schools, that means you'll be sending 20 separate reports - a total fee of $240! Because of this, Score Choice is an integral part of the ACT score reporting model. You have to go out of your way NOT to use it. That being said, you should know that not all schools want you to use Score Choice for the ACT. Some of the most selective schools, such as Yale and Stanford, ask that you send all of your test scores.Check the websites for the colleges where you plan on applying to make sure they allow Score Choice! What Does ACT Score Choice Mean for You? Since Score Choice is such a basic part of the ACT testing model, it's a good idea to factor it into your decisions about taking the test.ACT Score Choice means that you should: Take the Test More than Once Unless you get a perfect score on your first test, itââ¬â¢s advantageous for you to take the ACT more than once so you can improve your scores.Even if you donââ¬â¢t do much studying from one test to the next, your scores are likely to improve based on familiarity with the test format and the material. If you DO study a lot between tests, then your results will be even better! How many times should you take it? That depends. The general rule isno more than three four times;take a look at this article for more details. Don't stress yourself out too much, but keep in mind that if you have the chance to take the ACT three times, youââ¬â¢ll be able to send just your best score out of those three tests (for most schools). If you take the ACT a few times, youââ¬â¢ll also gain peace of mind in knowing that you didnââ¬â¢t pass up opportunities to maximize your scores.Score Choice means you can take the test more than once, turn a good score into a great score, and then only show colleges your best performance! Stay Positive Score Choice also means keeping your sanity when you get your results back from individual tests. No single test is the end of the world! If this is your first time taking the ACT, itââ¬â¢s likely that it wonââ¬â¢t be your best score. You can use your test results to study more (especially if you order Test Information Release) and knock it out of the park next time. Most schools wonââ¬â¢t ever see your lowest scores, so you should only concern yourself with them as a means of understanding and correcting your mistakes. If you can see what you did wrong on one test, youââ¬â¢ll be able to focus your studying on that area and avoid those same mistakes in the future. This blackboard was set up to encourage wagon trains traveling west in the 1800s. They thought they didn't have anything left to eat, but then they remembered to think positive and resorted to cannibalism. The Bottom Line Score Choice means that you can choose to send only your best ACT test scores to colleges. On the ACT, this is the rule rather than the exception because you'll pay per test date for score reports. Itââ¬â¢s to your advantage both financially and academically to send only your best scores to colleges. Because of Score Choice, you should plan to take the ACT more than once and remember that one test score isnââ¬â¢t going to make or break your chances of admission. If you study between tests and learn from your mistakes, you'll improve your scores, and that low score you were so worried about will never see the light of an admissions office! What's Next? Some college also Superscore the ACT, meaning they take your best ever score from each subsection of the test and combine them for your best composite score. Here's a full list of schools that use ACT Superscoring. Wondering when you should take the ACT? Read this article to figure out the best dates for you. You should also check out our complete study plan for the ACTso you can keep up with your studying and make the most of every test date! Want to improve your ACT score by 4+ points? Implementation of Patient Centered Concepts In a VA Medical Center to Research Paper
Implementation of Patient Centered Concepts In a VA Medical Center to Improve Quality Outcomes - Research Paper Example Problem Background The U. S. has the most advanced healthcare delivery of most countries in the world. Per capita expenditure totaling to thousands of dollars annually, and more of her GDP is ranked relatively higher on healthcare than most countries in the world, at 18.5 percent of GDP in 2007. It has the most sophisticated teaching hospitals and medical research centers in the world yet it is not ranked in first position worldwide. Additional factors significantly impacting how healthcare expenditure is allocated include a few diseases that comprise the bulk of healthcare expenditures. Significant variations in spending can also be mapped by regional, race and socio-economic status. Even diet has a major impact since the US also happen to be the most obese nation on the planet and in essence, just throwing money at the problem will not fix it. Similarly, Information Technology has been applied in very sophisticated ways to deliver better care, but not in a way that makes the cost a nd decisions (as to when and how to deliver it) more efficient and transparent. This paper highlights one case study that demonstrate how health concepts can improve health quality (such as in a VA medical center), and how it can serve as a key component of effective healthcare delivery by creating the necessary data framework for practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM). EBM is gaining traction among providers for two major reasons: firstly, its promise as a tool to help contain continually rising healthcare costs and, secondly its potential to dramatically improve healthcare quality. Implementation of Patient centered Concepts According to Conway et al (2006), the healthcare industry in the United States is... The paper tells that the healthcare industry in the United States is operating at a level of quality and efficiency below the desired standards of patientsââ¬â¢ healthcare professionals. The majority of concerns focus around access to care, quality of care, prevalence of incorrect medical diagnoses and rising costs. Furthermore, a solution for business problems can be attained by adopting return on investment (ROI) compared to value produced by addressing the problem and determining which solution is provided. Statistically, a considerable number of expensive health conditions accounted for almost half the total health care expenses, which was mostly chronic conditions and patients with multiple chronic conditions with up to seven times as much as patients with only one chronic condition. About a quarter of the total annual US expenditure on healthcare is spent on ineffective or redundant care. Healthcare premiums have arose by more than half within a decade for family premiums. T he U. S. spends more money per capita on healthcare than any other country. Similarly, organizational costs to acquire and implement electronic healthcare information systems are significantly; particularly to individual medical practitioners as most of the technology solutions currently available are not mature due to the lack of standards and other factors. Cumbersome workflows and ongoing training and maintenance costs are other barriers to acceptance. Misaligned cost burdens for individual practitioners are also an impediment to implementing electronic health information in the current environment.

The Impact Of Internship On Graduate Employability Management Essay
The Impact Of Internship On Graduate Employability Management Essay This report examines the impact of internships on graduate labour market. The view of this report is to find out what skills, knowledge and attributes are basically needed by graduate students to perform their professional duty in the practical job field in todays job market. The report then draws the key themes about what graduate employability is and what employers needs are in relation to graduates. Although non internship candidates find it more difficult to enter the job market, they have chances because employers look after soft skills from a candidate such as good communication skills, team work and also critical thinking. The report concludes by examining career prospects that graduates follow after doing an internship, whether they chose to follow an accounting career, or other industries, they have to think of medium and long term prospects in order to find a desired job. Introduction In recent years, there has been rapid expansion of higher education in UK. This has had important and deep effects on labour markets because employers need today highly educated employees. Internships provide practical experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what she or he is learning throughout the experience. Doing an internship provides opportunities for students to gain work experience and companies help them to get a job in the future. Internships introduce students to the world of work and allow them to gain business experience, skills and knowledge that are necessary to succeed in todays labour market. They allow students to connect their experience from the workplace, with the theoretical knowledge that they have explored during university. Definition of Internship An internship represents a formal program that provides practical experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what she or he is learning throughout the experience. Doing an internship provides opportunities for students to gain work experience and companies help them to get a job in the future. Also Employers are usually more concerned with your work experience than your qualifications and internships are often the only way to get the work experience you need to secure a job, so they are a vital part of your resume. Many employers prefer or require applicants who have done an internship or relevant work experience and in many of the more competitive job markets it is essential to set you apart from the others. However, some internships are unpaid and universities career development centres are asked to stop advertising unpaid internships on their websites, because interns cannot afford to work for weeks, and in some cases months, without being paid. Benefits and values of an internship According to Career Services Centre, the benefits of doing an internship allow you to gain a better perspective of post-graduation employment by applying the principles and theories a student developed during their seminar classes. Also students can develop a personal work ethic and be able to investigate their career interests and prospective career goals. An internship alleviates the development of professional contacts, which can help a student in the future for reference another company. By doing an internship you can develop a series of skills and knowledge that help students to choose from a wide range of possibilities about their future career. (Careers Services Centre, 2010-2011) The graduate labour market Graduate labour market offers information to students about any jobs available on the market, what recent graduates have done, average earnings that graduates can expect and also graduate recruitment trends. It is helpful to understand what a job in a real life is and identifies students options for future career developments. University of Wolverhampton (2010) states: The graduate labour market today is much more complex. Developments such as increased global competition and advances in technology mean that the workforce needs to be more highly skilled. This has led to many changes such as the importance of a degree when applying for a job, higher education is expanding and for todays market there are many students with a degree, which they increase competition within popular sectors. The graduate labour market continues to improve and many vacancies that employers are promoting are filled with graduates that have already worked for any of their organisations, through work placements, internships or vacation schemes. Graduate labour market Accounting For those graduates that have the right degrees, the current job market for accounting is very strong. Employers dont require a specific major of filed or study, but they are more focused on soft skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership and critical thinking. Accounting graduates find excellent opportunities in private sectors because they can work for a company; develop the knowledge about its business and the financial sector. Despite the tight labour market and strong demand, accounting graduates face tough competition, as top-tier firms expect skills beyond the sheepskin. Candidates must demonstrate technical knowledge and intangible qualities, such as presentation and public speaking, initiative, computer literacy and interpersonal abilities. Definition of employability [Employability is] a set of achievements, skills, understandings and personal attributes that make graduates more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy. (Yorke, 2004) Since the recession the graduate labour market had become increasingly competitive, which is even harder for students to get a job without having any experience. There are few vacancies on the market, which are filled very quickly. Students also consider that they wouldnt have gone to university giving the fact that the market is very competitive. Although, they prefer to go to university because it is a unique experience, where you develop a series of skills and knowledge for a subject they like. According to Times Higher Education, students were less sure that higher education had prepared them for the world of work, however, with 35 per cent disagreeing or strongly disagreeing that university had equipped them well for employment. (David Matthews, 2012) Post-internship vs. non-internship candidates Most undergraduate students know that having an internship represents a good opportunity for a full time job offer. Those that do not have the opportunity to do an internship, will be likely to have less experience and therefore harder to get into the job market. According to Birchalls latest research (2012), people without any experience had little or no chance of being offered a place on their graduate training programmes. Even more strikingly, almost three-quarters of graduate vacancies advertised at investment banks and half the training contracts offered by major law firls this year are likely to be filled by former interns. Also, companies tend to recruit candidates who already have worked for them. Career path The accounting industry is so varied because is very difficult to identify the types of accounting careers that a graduate can take. Depending on their studies they can work in any industry in accounting. There is public accounting where graduates can work for any sized firm, ranging from a large, international CPA firm to a small local accounting practice. Within the firm, they can work in such areas as audit, tax and management consulting. With government graduates can work for a specific company. And they may work in tax, finance and again IT or internal audits. Also they can create a path to success at either the federal, state or local level. Non-profit organizations and education also offer many diverse opportunities. (American Institute of CPAs, 2012) Skills, knowledge and aptitudes Internships provide students opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and aptitudes within a workplace environment. Most students benefit from higher education support and guidance in finding a good internship/placement. Today careers are very different and students find with difficulty a job without experience and the most significant challenge for graduates will be to manage their relationships with work and with learning. This requires skills such as negotiating, action planning and networking, added to qualities of self-awareness and confidence. These are the skills required to be self-reliant in career and personal development; skills to manage processes rather than functional skills. They are as valuable in education as in the workplace, and as valuable to organizations as they are to individuals. (Rose and Jonathan, 2012) Traditional jobs still exist but, there is a huge increase in the number of graduates, which means that there are fewer jobs with graduate training programs. AGR members recruited an estimated 80% of graduates available for work. Today the figure is 50%.( The Association of Graduate Recruiters, 2012). Graduates need to be flexible and adapt to new situations. In order to obtain a good job, a graduate needs transferable skills such as working well in a team, good communication skills and self-reliance skills which are enabling skills that will be essential for graduates to survive in todays labour market. They are the skills to manage a lifetimes progression in learning and work, rather than to do the work itself. They are process skills rather than functional skills. The complete graduate needs 4 major types of skills such as self reliant being able to manage their personal development; they have to be good team players having management skills, IT and presentation skills; they have to be specialists which helps them to become an expert at something (e.g. marketing, accounting, tax, IT, etc); and also they have to have general skills and knowledge (e.g. problem solving, critical thinking, basic accounting and finance). Career prospects Being an accountant requires to complete many tasks, preparing financial statements and also record business transations. They also calculate financial costs, develop IT systems to track financial performance. Post internship graduates have many opportunities to find a good job and this is because they have fresh thinking, new knowledge to businesses and analytical skills. They have a variety of choices to think as a medium term prospect for their career, as finishing ACCA or long term prospects such as considering a career in accounting as an auditor or a chartered accountant, working for the government or being self-employed. Conclusion and Recommendations Employers expect graduates to have the discipline, knowledge and technical competence in order to demonstrate a broad range of skills and attributes that include critical thinking, team working, communication skills and problem solving. Internships help students to develop these skills that enable them to find the desired job, to progress in their work and therefore to facilitate the success of the companies that they work for and contribute to society and the economy. Universities have to develop employability skills more in depth, through their programmes including practical guidance and teaching strategies that allow students to have a better understanding about what employers expect from them, and how they should demonstrate their skills to them.

La Moulin Galette
Michael Priddy Angela Brasser, Adjunct Professor Art 100 November 8, 2010 Le Moulin De La Galette The year was 1876 when Pierre Augustus Renoir painted his Le Moulin De La Galette this piece of art was in the style of impressionism. This was a fairly new art style during these years thus making it very popular at the time. Renoirââ¬â¢s works has endured the test of time with the popularity of his art and is still one of historyââ¬â¢s more prominent artists. The painting itself was an open-air oil portrait on canvas that measured 4ft. 3in. X5ft. 8in. the composition of the painting was of a large outdoor gathering of music and dancing which included many of Renoirââ¬â¢s friends, including one of his closest friends Georges Rivie`re. The following year while at the third impressionist exhibit of 1877 Rivie`re described the painting as follows: ââ¬Å"It is a page of history, a precious monument to Parisian life, Done with rigorous exactitude. No one before Renoir had thought of portraying an event in ordinary life on a canvas of such big dimensionsâ⬠(Rivie`re quote, Sayer 493) The type of line generally employed throughout the painting is primarily expressive and flowing, this is generally type of line impressionist used in their paintings. When Renoir painted this portrait his use of line seemed to soften the overall look of the painting. While there are areas in the painting where the artistââ¬â¢s line are more structured and deliberate the overall feel of the painting is that the line is free flowing and expressive.Renoirââ¬â¢s use of space is very precisely controlled by the overlapping of figures in the painting to create the feel of a large outdoor courtyard. While the overlapping of the figures create the feel of an open courtyard, it also portrays at the same time how completely cramped and crowded the dance area seems to be, this also helps define the space and also creates a feel of movement in the painting. Renoirââ¬â¢s scale that he placed on the table and the people around it, compared to the dancers in the rest of the painting helped the viewer take in the entire painting and gave it a sense of balance. The colors in the paintings palette were mostly analogous cool colors of different shades of blues and greens. There are other colors used in the painting and these are used in the complementary manner in order to intensify each color, there were fewer areas of complementary colors in the painting this was probably done in this manner to keep your eyes going to different focal points in the painting. Impressionism is a style of painting that uses a command of light and shadows and colors by discontinuous brush strokes to represent the effects of light. It shows that light can be reflected to show color in shadows and not just the brown or black darkness of a shadow that is typically described as a shadow. To many this mastery and skill of using light is one of the most important skills in painting. Renoir co mpletely showed his skill of adding light to his portraits by creating a feel of the sun cascading through the canopy of trees in the courtyard. All through the painting the viewer will see small streams of light gently falling onto the people and furnishings in the courtyard. There does seem to be a repeating pattern in the painting especially in the way the same colors are used throughout the painting and how there seems to be certain figures looking directly towards you. By the way Renoir used this type of line orientation also helps in defining the relationship of space by having different figures looking directly at you from different levels in the painting thus creating a feel of spatial depth. The focal point and emphasis of the painting seems to have been placed on the area where the woman is leaning down with her hand placed upon the young girl in the striped dress, the lady is in conversation with one of the young men at the table. The young girl has her gaze focused beyond the scope of the painting possibly watching the band as they play the music that the group is enjoying and dancing too or maybe another activity that has caught her attention. One of the identifiable figures in the painting was of the male who is seated at the table to the far right who seems to be either writing or possibly sketching the lady, who used as the focal point, by the way he is so closely looking at her trying either to take in all she is saying or to study her for his sketch. That male figure in fact is of Georges Rivie`re the friend of Renoir who was mentioned earlier. The painting has used asymmetrical balance; this type of approach differs from symmetrical balance, which is when there are components on each side of the portrait that mirror each other (Sayer 145).Another way Renoir created and shown asymmetrical balance in this portrait was from the larger area of the table and the guests around it and how it compared to the other areas of where the dancers have gather ed. Also the darker and more prominent areas of the painting are balanced by the open area where the sunlight seems to show an area of the ground. By doing this the artist has added the balance of the lightened area to the shaded darker area, and also the area of less activity to area of the dance floor, by doing this you are again drawn back to the focal point of the painting. This analysis has focused on certain parts of Renoirââ¬â¢s La Moulin De La Galette, but a viewer must try to be able see how each of the parts simply compliment each other to completely appreciate this wonderful art work. People have often stated many times in the past that ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know art, but I know what I likeâ⬠with this attitude a viewer will be able to enjoy this painting immensely, but when you realize and see the way Renoir used so many artistic tools and techniques to achieve this work of art, then the viewer will be able actually to appreciate this art work. The skill and though t that have been used on this painting is obviously evident. Most of Renoirââ¬â¢s paintings have a more somber feel and approach, but this painting depicts a fun and lighthearted day that was overly filled with dancing, music and wine that was enjoyed by all in attendance. {Total word count 1103}Work cited Sayer, Henry M. Curley’s Wife
How does Steinbeck present the character of Curlers wife in Of Mice and Men? Steinbeck's ââ¬ËOf Mice and Men' is a poignant tale which tells of a number of disconnected, isolated characters. Curlers wife epitomises the extreme loneliness of the human condition. Although she only makes a significant appearance three times in the novel, she plays an important part both in terms of plot development and in terms of furthering the readers' understanding of the theme of loneliness and alienation.Steinbeck uses a number of techniques to portray Curlers wife and the resulting character is fairly hard to pin down. Although Steinbeck uses a third person omniscient narrator, it is important to acknowledge that we learn of Curlers wife through a male perspective; the author/ narrator is male, as are all of the other ranch dwellers who comment on and Judge Curlers wife, potentially subtly prejudicing the reader. Curlers wife is known throughout the novel as ââ¬ËCurlers wife' and this has a number of effects. Firstly, her lack of personal identity dehumanises her.Every other character, including Crooks, has a name. Curlers wife is consistently identified as her husband's possession. This is a constant reminder as to the main reason that the anch workers cannot talk to her: they are anxious that Curley could take offence at any male engagement with his wife and that, because he is the boss's son, they could lose their Jobs as a result. The name she is referred to by the narrator and by the other characters in the novel could be seen as indication of women's inferior social status in 1930s America.Although in a letter to an actress playing Curlers wife in a stage version of ââ¬ËOf Mice and Men', Steinbeck insists he is sympathetic to the only female character, as readers, we have to work hard to feel sympathy towards her. Through the use of the other characters' opinions, the reader is given a biased view of Curlers wife before even meeting her. For example, Candy, wh o is portrayed as a trustworthy, likeable character, tells George that Curleys wife ââ¬Ëgives Slim the eye', meaning that she flirts with him, and apparently all the other men on the ranch. He finishes his piece of gossip by concluding that she is ââ¬Ëa tart'. This view is echoed by other men on the ranch later in the novel, and George also decides after their initial brief meeting that Curlers wife is indeed a tramp', ââ¬Ëpoison', Jailbait' and a ââ¬Ërat trap'. All of the men's insults suggest that Curleys wife is sexually available to anyone. There is a sense of hypocrisy here given that almost all of the men, including Curley, frequent Susy's place, the local brothel or ââ¬Ëcathouse'.When Curlers wife first appears in the novel, supposedly looking for Curley (as she always is) in the bunkhouse, the description of her appearance may seem to support Candys opinion of her. Her heavy make-up (full, rouged lips'â⬠¦ fingernails were red'), her overly coiffured hair-st yle which is mentioned every time she appears in the novel, and her choice of clothes and shoes ââ¬Ëred mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers') is not only incongruous with the ranch lifestyle, but also could be seen as an attempt to appear seductive. Her body language ââ¬â ââ¬Ëleaned back against the door frame so that ner body was thrown torward ââ¬Ë ââ¬â could ce rtainly suggest that sne is physically ottering herself to the men, and her manner of speaking ââ¬â ââ¬Ëplayfully- could be interpreted as flirtatious. However, it is significant that when she is first introduced, she is referred to as a ââ¬Ëgirl' which suggests that she is young and naive. Indeed, it is implied in the ovel that she is very young. Whit refers to her as the new kid' (although subsequently calls her a ââ¬Ë100100') and she herself retorts Whatta ya think I am, a kid?In addition, when she tells her story to Lennie, she refers to a recent inci dent which happened when she was fifteen. The other interesting aspect of her first appearance is that the men are alerted to her presence because the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off. Again, later on, in the barn, Steinbeck uses light in the description of Curleys wife's dead body. The contrast is that in the first scene she locks off natural light and in the final scene, the light was growing soft' casting an almost romantic atmosphere in the barn where Curlers wife lies, seemingly at rest. The second point here, is that Curleys wife is always appearing at doorways ââ¬â of the bunkhouse or in Crooks' room, but never managing to enter. This may be a metaphor for the fact that she is always an outsider. The only time she enters a male space and seems to make contact is Just before her death. After our first meeting with Curleys wife, it would be easy to agree with the men's sexist view towards her. Steinbeck ontinues to make it difficult for the reader to sympathi se with her in her second scene when she appears at the doorway of Crooks' quarters. Her mannerism may be seen to be somewhat unpleasant and aggressive, ââ¬ËThey left all the weak ones here'â⬠¦ ââ¬ËAn' what am I doin' here talking to a bunch of bindle stiffs ââ¬â a nigger an' a dum-dum and a lousy 01â⬠² sheep ââ¬â an' likin' it because they ain't nobody else'. However, if we look at her actions, all the time, the only thing she is seeking is human contact. She is extremely lonely and isolated, as she tries to explain to the men: ââ¬ËThink I don't like to alk to somebody ever' once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?Several times she indicates that her marriage is not happy, that Curley is self- obsessed and that he is boastful and violent. Between the lines, Steinbeck is portraying a sad, isolated character who is doomed to be unsuccessful when she reaches out to other human beings because of her position on the ranch. In this scene, we also see what might be described as an extremely nasty side to Curlers wife. When the conversation does not go her way ââ¬â Candy openly insults her she turns on Crooks, using her one element of power as a white woman over a black man: Well, you keep your place then, Nigger.I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny. Although this threat is abhorrent, perhaps it indicates the level of her frustration with her own position. She is at the bottom of the hierarchy of white people, and her only form of control could be to accuse Crooks of some sort of inappropriate behaviour that would lead to his being put to death. The final time we see Curleys wife is the only time she seems to open up and reveal her vulnerability nd her disappointment with the way her life has turned out. Ironically, even as she is confessing all, ââ¬Ël ain't told this to nobody before.Maybe I oughtn't to', her audience, Lennie, is not listening because he is caught up in his own fantasy world. Therefore, although this scene serves to show the poignancy of Curlers wife's character, it also underlines that at no time in the novel does she succeed in making any human contact. When we learn that ââ¬Ëher words tumbled out in a passion of communication, as though sne hurried betore ner listener could be taken away, it is as though sne as had her story, her identity, bottled up inside her and she is desperate to share her hopes, dreams and disappointments with anyone who might listen. Her background reveals a sad and lonely childhood full of mistrust. We learn that she has a poor relationship with her mother and that she has enjoyed male attention which has probably been superficial and has led to her believing that she could have had a career in the movies'. Curleys wife's naivety is emphasised by the way that she behaves around Lennie. She flits between thinking he is ââ¬Ënuts' and encouraging physical contact. She believes that e is ââ¬ËJus' like a big baby, an d although she is aware that he had crushed Curlers hand, shows no caution around him when she offers for him to stroke her hair. This may be because she is so over-excited by the fact that she believes that she has somebodys attention ââ¬â possibly for the first time since arriving on the ranch ââ¬â that she does not think beyond the moment. The reader knows that Curlers wife is doomed the minute she says that she likes to stroke her hair because it is soft. There is a poignant irony that it is her offer to Lennie that leads to her death. She is enjoying the attention and perhaps is also lightly motivated by a moment of kindness to let Lennie enjoy the feel of her hair.Ultimately, though, it is her concern with her appearance: You'll muss it upâ⬠¦. You stop it now, you'll mess it up' that makes Lennie inadvertently break her neck in a panicked effort to keep her quiet. The image Steinbeck uses to describe the moment of her death dehumanises Curlers wife: ââ¬Ëher body flopped like a fish'. It is in the final description of her that it seems that we are offered a true account of Curleys wife's true essence: ââ¬ËAnd the meanness and the plannings and the discontent and the ache or attention were all gone from her face. She was very pretty and simple and her face was sweet and young. ââ¬Ë This short passage shows that underneath her hardened exterior she was in essence a decent person, which is what Steinbeck refers to in his letter to the actress. The ââ¬Ëache for attention' had had the opposite of its desired effect, in fact pushing people away rather than attracting them to her. Furthermore, her dream to be a movie star or iconic figure is echoed in the almost Sleeping Beauty-like description of her: ââ¬ËNow her rouged cheeks and reddened lips made her seem alive nd sleeping very lightly. The only time Curleys wife is described in a positive manner is in her death, and even this is quickly negated by Candy placing blame on her for ruini ng their dream: You God damn trampâ⬠¦. Ever'body knowed you'd mess things upâ⬠¦ You lousy tart'. In conclusion, Steinbeck uses a number of techniques to create Curlers wife. Some readers may feel sympathy for her, others may share the ranch workers' view of her. For my part, I see her as the epitome of loneliness; her only defence against a sexist environment ironically leads to her further alienation.

What Are the Prices Composings for the Professional Research Paper Writing Service
What Are the Prices Composings for the Professional Research Paper Writing Service What Are the Priceââ¬â¢s Composings for the Professional Research Paper Writing Service? You have three big writing assignments due next week as well as a big exam. You are more likely to think that it will be impossible for you to finish them all and do well. There just arenââ¬â¢t enough hours in a day. Many students in this situation turn to a professional research paper writing service. Although some will tell you that this is unethical, at its heart, professional academic writing is a business just like any other. If someone provides a service, they deserve to get paid. The problem is that as a college student your budget is limited. You have to carefully monitor your spending. For this reason, when choosing a professional writing service, you may decide to opt for the cheapest one. But is that really a good idea? Here are the reasons you might want to consider paying a little more for a professional writing service. Research The foundation of a quality paper is the quality of the research. You need to be sure that everything in your paper is backed up by reliable, relevant sources that provide strong supporting details for your thesis. You also need to be certain that these sources are properly cited. If a writer is paid poorly, he will not be motivated and may cut corners on this part, or may not have a good repertoire of research skills. Proofreading This is another area which an unmotivated or lazy writer may consider as unimportant. The result of handing in a paper that has not been thoroughly checked and proofread can be disastrous. It could be full of errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation and you may find yourself devoting some of your limited time to fixing them. Meeting the Deadline If you are experiencing panic about finishing this assignment, probably, itââ¬â¢s because your deadline is approaching. A motivated and professional writer will be willing and able to move things around in their schedule or possibly stay up late at night to finish the job. If a writer is not paid well, he/she will not be as flexible. That could result in missing your deadline. You could easily do that on your own for free. Demands of an Advanced Level of Study Itââ¬â¢s not hard to find someone who can write a simple paper, but if you need someone to write a paper for your masterââ¬â¢s program in sociology, for example, or for your pre-med degree, the stakes are much higher. A writer that is competent in these levels will need to have an advanced degree. If thatââ¬â¢s the case, he/she probably would like to earn a lot more money and you need to shell out some extra cash to make it worth their time. You Get What You Pay for A quality professional writer deserves to be paid. If a writer is not adequately compensated, you cannot expect them to produce a quality work. There are many things besides price to consider when hiring a professional writing service. In the end, let us assure you that the decision to go with a cheap writing service can really cost you much more.

Exam questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Exam questions - Essay Example Times have changed, and this has brought issues such as environmental concerns (Shaheena, 2008). The following are some of the other trends that have arisen in the sphere; Organizations under Constant Scrutiny One notable development over the past decades is that organizations are continually loosing grip of the information that reaches their customers. This is the information era, and everyone seems to know more than they actually do. The fact that people are constantly seeking information, the numerous channels of passing information, and that there is freedom of expression in most nations forces most organizations to lose some grip on the information that gets to the public (Thomas, 2009). This is the reasons why organizations are competing with these outside sources of information by using the same means such as setting up websites along with utilizing popular social media sites. Responsibility as an Organizational value During the past few decades, many organizations have incorp orated the elements such as sustainability, responsibility, and respect into their workplaces. Initially, only a handful held this trait since their work demanded so. Examples of such organizations included Ben & Jerryââ¬â¢s, Starbucks, and Tomââ¬â¢s of Maine. ... In 1943, Johnson & Johnson was accredited as the first organization to act responsibly towards the community. While the CSR department is deemed as the core steward of this attribute, present trends depict that organizations are using them internally requiring everyone to exhibit good citizenship. Recognition that CSR can foster skills in the workplace It is said by some economic experts that the world economy is still trying to heal its wounds from the economic downturn of 2008. During this period, most multinationals focused on the validity of every job and employee within their realm. The recession caused most organizations of this nature to limit the leadership and training initiatives. This caused a challenge since the heart of any organization can be stated as its employees; they put the welfare of the organization in a destitute place whenever they are not advancing in any way. The future seemed obscured for most of these organizations up until some discovered that CSR held a key to the issue (Thomas, 2009). Organizations such as IBM used CSR to indirectly train its employees. The technique was that activities embedded into CSR such as volunteering are imperative in building skills in employees; mainly through skill-based and pro-Bono volunteering. For instance, IBM commissioned approximately a hundred and fifty thousand workers to perform community service all across the globe. This technique was assumed by other organizations who sought to benefit in the same way. It was possible to do so because the workload was dismal thanks to the recession, but it gave organizations something to mull about. Presently, organizations can consent some of their workforce to this service to the society and consequently develop skills without

Response to chapter 7 STRAIN OF TWO CITIES in the book Inside Rikers Essay
Response to chapter 7 STRAIN OF TWO CITIES in the book Inside Rikers - Essay Example Nevertheless, the criminal has to make the decision of maximizing these opportunities in order to be released from the cycle of imprisonment, criminality, and poverty. Society provides the conditions for poverty, which easily breeds criminality. Angel is one of Wynnââ¬â¢s students at Fresh Start (Wynn, 2001). For his first job, he earned eight dollars an hour as a handyman in a hospice for people with AIDS (Wynn, 2001). Unfortunately, his contract changed, so he shifted from a full-time job to a part-time one (Wynn, 2001). Wynn was amazed that Angel did not revert back to a life of crime. Angel admitted that being poor and an ex-convict sharply decreases opportunities for advancement (Wynn, 2001). He complained about not being able to get jobs because of his criminal record: ââ¬Å"I feel like Iââ¬â¢ll never stop paying for the past. Iââ¬â¢ve done my time, but it doesnââ¬â¢t seem to matterâ⬠(Wynn, 2001). At the same time, he did not have healthcare insurance, so when he got sick, he waited to be sick enough to be brought to the emergency room (Wynn, 2001). Wynn had to help him get a free checkup. Angel provides proof that society tends to push people to poverty, which facilitates criminal conduct. Society can reverse these conditions by offering opportunities for education and employment. John Wareham is an international executive recruiter, a psychologist, and famous business lecturer who joined Fresh Start as a teacher (Wynn, 2001). Wynn narrated a debate that John initiated, where three lawyers and writers debated with three convicts on the topic of robbing a bank versus working at McDonalds. The lawyers and writers argued for robbing the bank, while the convicts argued against it. Wynn stressed that the convicts used their hearts and minds to support their arguments. John said that this change in thinking and behavior would get
